TP-Link Archer C7 (AC1750) Wireless Routers Dual Band Full Review
This gigabit router basically is a no-frills router and it has next-generation of wireless standard, the 802.11 AC. If you are seeking for AC router that can provide some of 11 ac performance around, it is not the answer. But, it is not a bad choice if you are looking or AC router that gives you any terrible with the blazing speed. It has good throughput with good wireless coverage. It only lacks of few extra goodies that others can provide.
Specs and Design
Basically the C7 is a large router with shiny, black and plastic housing and if you compare it with sleek premium 11AC routers new model, it looks a cheap router.
Speaking about the specs, it has three detachable 5dBi antennas which are sturdiest. Commonly, many router antennas flop over and then tilt even if they are firmly attached. But, they are different from the C7’s because it can stay uprights because its antennas are thick enough.
On the front panels as other routers, it has LEDs while the rear panel comes with two USB 2.0 ports to support external drives and printers. The back, there are four Gigabit Ethernet ports as well as a Gigabit WAN port. The power switch is located at the rear which is the toggle button if you want to turn the wireless radio on and off together with the connections of the antenna and the WPS/reset button.
There are also three internal antennas inside the C7 to distribute to good wireless range. It is a dual-band router that can support you even more than 450 Mbps on its 2.4 GHz band. It also provides you even more than 1,700 Mbps on 5 GHz.
Setup and Features
If you purchase it, you will also get a resource mini disc and a quick connection guide. The guide instruction users show you how to connect the cables and the modem to this router. So basically it takes few minutes for you to understand the instruction and then use it.
It also has web setup that is easy because the interface guide you for everything you need to deal with the router up and running.
The interface of C7 is utilitarian and text-based, while some advanced features are presented but you don’t see in more consumer routers such as IGMP proxy to manage IP multicasting. In addition, it also has unique feature that is WDS bridging as well as WPA2 Enterprise support.
You may dislike about the limitation does exist in the wireless settings. This product has limited wireless configuration options to 802.11b/g mixed mode and 11b/g/n mode at 2.4GHz while the 5GHz is limited to 11a/n mixed and 11a/n/ac modes.
The NAS has basic functionality. The C7 allows you to connect USB drives for file, FTP, or media servers. It also supports a printer server with USB printer that is connected to this router. Within the interface, you can easily start and stop the service, add shared folders and define an interval of time in order to scan for media. We have to say that the NAS and print services in this device is sufficient but don’t expect that it has rich features as you can find in Netgear with the ReadyShare and ReadyPrint services in the routers.
C7 (AC1750) has good performance but it is not the top among the 11ac routers in the market. It doesn’t have hardware specs to deal with the top-tier latest Linksys EA690. But, we think that the decent performance can support you to do most tasks for the average home user.
The comparable router for C7 is Amped Wireless’ High Power 700 mW Dual Band AC since this Wi-FI router has similar specs but the C7 has slightly slower throughput. The C7 averaged 100 Mbps, but the Amped Wireless device averaging 122 Mbps.
For us, the C7 has good wireless coverage and make us more impressed than the Amped router. We tested in 2.4Ghz band and the throughput slowed by 10 percent as we moved to 30 feet away but at 5GHz, it was dropped about 8 percent, a good performance because even very high performing routers can drop to 15 percents.
Very good wireless coverage
Sturdy external antennas
Gigabit LAN and WAN ports
Easy to use and comprehensive interface
The fastest in one of best mid-range speeds
|The wireless settings are limited
If we have to tell you about our rating, we put the score about three out of five star. It is not for those who want to look for top 11ac router, but it is an affordable router and the design is not poorly presented. Besides, it has a very good wireless range.
So, in case that you are looking for 802.11 AC router but don’t want to have any terrible with the blazing speed, you can go with the C7.
Some Considerations To Take Before Choosing A Wireless Router
There are some considerations you have to take before choosing a wireless router, especially if you have a plan to purchase a new one.
First, you have to consider about the size of your coverage area, the types of devices you want to connect to the router and the number of clients you want to serve. You don’t have to go with the greatest and latest models. It is useless if you purchase the latest models but you never use the features.
Single vs. Dual Band
Single works with 2.4 GHz frequency band and it is commonly least expensive. But, they will compete with other home devices with the same radio band such as Bluetooth devices, microwave ovens as well as wireless phones. Some people said that the single band is good for enough things such as web surfing, social media service from Twitter to Facebook, only that.
If your device (one or more) is commonly used for streaming video from Netflix for example, or you need wireless routers good for gaming online such as Xbox Live, it is better to choose dual band router. It means there are two radios. One will connect to 2.4GHz band and the other is connected to 5GHz band. As you know, the 5GHz band is less crowded compared to the 2.4GHz band so that you it gives you minimal signal interference which ideal for video is streaming as well as gaming. The dual-band router also provides you to assign a band to specific clients and applications.
Even there are tri-band routers with three radios. One works with 2.4GHz, and two go at 5GHz. These models are great for those who have to deal with heavy network traffics with lots of torrent downloading, file transfer, online gaming and video streaming.
About the wireless protocols
To send and receive data, Wireless Ethernet networks equipped by 802.11 protocols. The devices that use the older version will get limited data transfer rates since it only operates on 2.4GHz band. Right now, people are using Wi-Fi protocol that support you for maximum data and operate both the 2.4GHz as well as 5GHz bands. It has MIMO technology with several antennas to send and receive even more than four spatial streams to enhance its performance. Laptops, smartphones and connected home devices at this time use 802.11n Wi-Fi. In another word, the 802.11n router is a proper device for households that are capable to support device sharing internet access. On the other hands, if you use your network to share large files, several smart TVs, gaming console, media streaming devices with wireless connectivity, mobile devices and others, it means you need a more powerful router with the latest Wi-Fi technology.
The Newest Class Of Wi-Fi Routers
The newest class of Wi-Fi routers uses 802. 11 ac technology with several enhancements compared to the previous protocols such as more MIMO spatial streams, wider channel bandwidth that is more than 160GHz compared with 40Hz and the last is beamforming as the technology to send Wi-Fi signals to the clients instead of broadcasting to all directions.
If you are seeking for 802.11 acc routers, they are labeled with AC 1200, AC 1750, AC 3200 and more.
